Leave No Trace - A Hiker's Yarn
I was inspired to use Twine to write an interactive fiction. Some of my knitterly friends and I were discussing the idea of writing knitting patterns inspired by the principles of Leave No Trace. I decided to take a crack at combining these two inspirations in one.
Leave No Trace - A Hiker's Yarn
Many of us have picked flowers or collected rocks, wandered off the trail to avoid mud puddles or get a closer look at something, tossed an apple core into the woods or beckoned a chipmunk closer by offering to share trail mix. All of these actions may seem harmless, but they pose various risks and severely impact our natural resources and the quality of our and others' outdoor recreation experiences. This knitalong is designed as an exploration of outdoor ethics known as the Leave No Trace (LNT) Principles.
This is a scarf project that uses about 440 yards of worsted weight yarn on 5mm needles. It is recommended that you make your joins between skeins of yarn at the edges of the work rather than in the middle. Once blocked and knit as written, the final product is about 70" long. You can make it longer by knitting additional repeats of sections. You can turn it into an infinity scarf by doing a provisional cast on plus two rows of stockinette instead of Cast on A or B, and finishing with two rows and a kitchener stitch to join the ends. It is a choose your own knitting adventure after all!
If you are familiar with LNT go ahead and start with [[Cast on A]]. If you are not familiar with LNT, or just want to choose this option for personal curiosity reasons, go ahead and start with [[Cast on B]]. Cast on 50 sts
Work 6 rows of K1 P1 rib
Row 1(RS): Knit all stitches
Row 2: Purl
Row 3: P2, (p5togm5, p1) rep to end.

Notes:
p5togm5 - purl 5 together and make 5 (purl 5 together but keep the loop on the left needle; YO and purl 1 through the same 5 stitches for a total of 3 new stitches; YO again and purl one more through the same 5 stitches for a total of 5 new stitches; drop the original 5 stitches from your left needle)
p3togm3 - purl 3 together and make 3 (purl 3 together but keep them on the left needle; YO and purl 1 through the same 3 stitches for a total of 3 new stitches; drop the original 3 stitches from your left needle)
You have two weeks of summer vacation time coming up that you wish to spend camping in a National Park. You definitely want to spend some time during your visit exploring the backcountry. Do you [[research the regulations and apply for permits]] or figure you can [[just wing it when you get there]]? Well done! Now you can not only hike all the trails you want, but you are also permitted a campfire! Knit two rows in stockinette.

Now you go to the backcountry and you have to set up camp in a pristine area. You have two weeks of summer vacation time coming up that you wish to spend camping in a National Park. You definitely want to spend some time during your visit exploring the backcountry. Do you [[research the regulations and apply for permits]] or figure you can [[just wing it when you get there]]? Oh no! Dropped a stitch! It is always better to disperse your impacts in pristine areas so that they can remain so. By setting your camp up where others have been before, this pristine area is one step closer to being forever marred by human impacts.

As you are getting ready to return from the backcountry, you first have to clean the waste up from your campsite so that you can pack it all out. Have you have been [[packing up]] your toilet paper or [[burying it]] while your were camped here? Good job! By avoiding the area where impacts are just beginning to show, you have done your part in keeping this area pristine. Dispersing impacts is the best way to keep an untouched area natural.

If you bury it, animals will smell your scent and dig it up, scattering the paper around. Even burning it is dangerous as you could start a forest fire.

Do you [[take pictures]] of all the beautiful nature or do you [[bring back a few]] pebbles and flowers that you'll press as souveneirs? You're a natural! Many people think that there are plenty of flowers in the wilderness, that one of a million would never be missed; but if every person took a little insignificant piece of nature, there would soon be no nature left for anyone. As you already know, the best practice it to leave rocks, plants, and other natural objects as you find them and take only pictures.

Back at the Park's main campground, you choose a nice site and begin gathering sticks from the ground to make a fire in the fire ring. After enjoying a small fire (but big enough to roast marshmallows), you are ready to retire for the night. The fire is pretty well burnt out, do you [[leave it smouldering]] or go fill a bucket at the spigot to [[douse it out]] with? Naughty, naughty. Drop a stitch! You may think that there are plenty of flowers in the wilderness, that one of a million would never be missed, but if every person took a little insignificant piece of nature, there would soon be no nature left for anyone. The best practice it to leave rocks, plants, and other natural objects as you find them and take only pictures.

After enjoying a small fire (but big enough to roast marshmallows), you are ready to retire for the night. The fire is pretty well burnt out, do you [[leave it smouldering]] or go fill a bucket at the spigot to [[douse it out]] with? Risky move, drop a stitch! Did you know that the vast majority (nearly 90%) of forest fires are caused by negligent people? Smokey would surely reprimand you for leaving your coals smouldering.

You're enjoying the sounds of birds chirping and a babbling brook with your coffee and breakfast oats. A couple of curious chipmunks and squirrels are posing adorably nearby and seem to be eyeing your blueberries. Do you quickly [[put away the berries]] so that the critters can't get at them or do you set out a trail of fruit to [[lure the cute little guys]] in closer? Smokey would be proud! Did you know that the vast majority (nearly 90%) of forest fires are caused by negligent people? It's good that you know to douse your campfire before you go to bed.

Storing your food securely and observing wildlife from a distance is the best practice. You should never feed wildlife because your food can damage their health, feeding them alters their natural behaviors and exposes them to predators and other dangers.

You're spending your last day hiking a spectacular, but quite narrow trail. It's clear you need to walk this route single file, but there are several others on the trail with you. You remember to stay to the right to yield to those running past. Do you remember whether [[uphill traffic]] has the right of way or [[downhill traffic]]? Oops, dropped a stitch! You remember to stay to the right to yield to those running past. Do you remember whether [[uphill traffic]] has the right of way or [[downhill traffic]]? Well done! Being courteous to other visitors includes yielding to uphill traffic, as well as faster traffic. You should also follow the mantra "let nature's sounds prevail" rather than bringing city noise with you.
